Ofsted states that as part of children’s social, moral, spritual and cultural (SMSC) development, schools must encourage respect for democracy and support for participation in the democratic process. Democracy is on of the fundamental British values (FBVs) which should be integrated into school and classroom routine.
During our history topic of Ancient Greeks, I chose to engage the class in a vote using ballot slips and a box as an introduction to the term “democracy” and the differences between Ancient Greek and modern UK democracy. It was clear from the discussion/debate that followed the counting of the votes that the children were engaged in the voting system and understood the importance of using your right to vote in order to voice your opinion and make a difference.
